Rhebokskloof Christmas Lunch: A Harvest Table Feast on a Paarl Wine Farm

The serene hidden valley setting of Rhebokskloof is an ideal setting for an appealing South African farm-style Christmas lunch. The Victorian farmhouse that houses the restaurant opens onto a shaded stoep with steps leading down to a wide terrace, old oak trees and wide lawns leading down to a dam. There’s a jungle gym in the shade of the oaks, plenty of space for kids to play, and the whole scene is embraced by an amphitheatre of vineyards with the fynbos-clad slopes of Paarl Mountain above.

A Christmas harvest table

The Rhebok restaurant has pulled out all the stops for a generous farm feast on Christmas Day, in the form of a harvest table set menu. Plum-glazed pork belly, cherries and water chestnuts in a celebratory salad, and the Christmassey aromas of ginger and cinnamon wafting through the dessert extravaganza, are just a few of the nostalgic festive flavour profiles adapted to a summer Christmas lunch menu:

• freshly baked baguette, herb butter, vibrant herb pesto
• water chestnut and confit salmon salad, fresh cherries, pickled onion, caper berries and lemon herb vinaigrette
• Parma ham and grilled stone fruit salad, heirloom tomatoes, toasted cashew nuts, and creamy feta
• duo of mains: plum-glazed pork belly and braised brisket
• sage-infused Dauphinoise potatoes, glazed carrots and parsnips, creamy spinach with crispy bacon and parmesan
• dessert trio: Black Forest gateau; ginger and cinnamon pecan nut pie; burnt Basque cheesecake.

There’s also a parallel vegetarian alternative menu starring a butternut and red onion tarte tatin with candied nuts and fresh cherries.

Children under 12 can order straight from the regular Little Bucks menu (picky eaters no problem) which features perennial favourites, including burgers and chicken strips, pizzas and veggie bowls.
