If cheese is your thing, put this one in your diary! The SA Cheese Festival 2019, happening at Sandringham, just outside Stellenbosch, is one of the highlights on the Cape’s culinary calendar. With hundreds of cheeses to sample, foodie celebs doing presentations, gorgeous autumn weather, and lots of good stuff to drink – it’s no wonder this award-winning event gets thousands of visitors each year, and was named Cape Winelands’ Festival of Year in 2018!
So much cheese, so little time
Make your way to the Dairy Square, home to the Cheese Emporium, where you’ll find numerous local and international small, medium and large cheeseries. At Blossom’s Gazebo, you’ll be able to enjoy a good old cheese-carving competition. For recipe inspiration, head to the Cape Made Kitchen, and enjoy demonstrations by The Private Hotel School’s chefs, as well as an impressive variety of cheese-related products. Plus, there’ll be live music playing throughout the three days.
Back again at this year’s festival is the not-to-be-missed Tasting Room where cheese is paired with South Africa’s top 10 chenin blancs, craft beer, and even chocolate. Come watch, listen and taste at no extra cost, and be entertained by well-known foodies such as The Kate Tin (Katelyn Allegra), The Food Fox (Ilse van der Merwe), Pete Goffe-Wood (MasterChef SA and Ultimate Braai Master judge) as well as the popular Bok Radio breakfast duo Wimpie and Le-Lue.
And if you’re a proper fromage fan(atic), get to the Connoisseurs Experience – aimed at aficionados seeking a bespoke experience. With only 100 tickets available for each day of the festival, the R950 ticket includes shaded seating, a cheeseboard, bottle of wine, and more.
