In late November 2019, Ceres Golf Estate is hosting the annual Cherry Fair; and Ceres Rail is operating two return trips to the festival aboard one of its magnificent steam trains. Not only will you get to ride an old beauty across the picturesque valleys of the Witzenberg, passing through the majestic Michell’s Pass en route to Demeter Station in Ceres, but once there, you’ll be able to eat cherries to your heart’s content.
After a day of cherry-soaked celebrations, revellers will board the train at 2.20pm, before heading back to Cape Town in time for a 7pm arrival.
What to expect at the cherry festival
Named after the Roman goddess of the harvest, Ceres is the fruit basket of South Africa. Cherries are just one of the many juicy fruits this region is renowned for, and the nearby Klondyke Cherry Farm is a popular location for cherry-picking during the season (which is usually from end-November to January).
Ceres Golf Estate hosts the annual Cherry Fair to celebrate the beginning of the season. As such, guests can expect lorry loads of fresh cherries, as well as an array of cherry-themed artisanal stalls, and cherry-inspired food and beverages.
Book your steam train ride to Ceres
Snacks are for sale aboard the train, along with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, muffins and cupcakes; all of which can be enjoyed in the comfort of the Dining Car. There’s also a Bar Car that sells alcoholic beverages and cold drinks.
Ceres Rail has scheduled two return trips: one on 23 November, and the other on the 24 November. Tickets tend to sell out quickly for their steam train trips, so early booking is recommended.
