Suidoosterfees: A Six-Day Showcase of Local Creativity at Artscape
The Mother City’s “Local is Lekker” arts festival is back.
By Inside Guide • 17 April 2023
The Suidoosterfees (named after the Mother City’s infamous wind) is a wide-ranging arts festival offering drama, comedy, dance, music in all genres, art exhibitions, talks and workshops, as well as youth theatre and children’s productions.

Celebrating its 20th year, it champions local culture and Afrikaans – a language spoken by a wide variety of people in the Cape. Expect showbiz legends sharing the stage with rising stars, sharp social commentary alongside pure joy (and every other emotion besides), spectacular artistry, heritage and heart.

The diverse programme includes the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, playwright Reza de Wet’s extraordinary Mirakel, David Kramer’s latest musical about Afrikaans folk singers in 1950s Hollywood, social media personality Aunty Bettie (aka Dean Smith) and comedian Tollie Parton (aka Wynand Kotze), a dance-drama inspired by the 2018 Knysna fires, a choir gala, a Rossini opera, children’s favourite Liewe Heksie, a talk by Gift of the Givers’ Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, and a sunset salsa social.
Good to know If you’re bilingual, you’ll get the full benefit – but there are several shows and events that feature English (as well as other SA languages), and of course many art forms (such as music and dance) communicate in a universal tongue.
