Taalmonument Full Moon Picnics 2018: A Lunar Celebration in Paarl
Alfresco feasts in a picturesque and tranquil setting.
By Inside Guide • 16 October 2018
Located on a hill overlooking Paarl, with some of the most unique and beautiful views in the Western Cape, the Taalmonument was built in 1975 to celebrate the Afrikaans language. Its location makes it the perfect venue for these full-moon picnics, which happen throughout summer (26 October 2018 to 22 March 2019).
Picnic dos and don’ts
Picnickers are free to bring hampers from home, or you can pre-book one from Volksmond Coffee Shop (which is also open for drinks, pizzas and light snacks all evening). The monument is open until 10pm, so if you are bringing out-of-towners with you, they might be interested in doing one of the free guided tours, which take place at 6.30pm (no booking is required).
What to bring
- your children, as there are playgrounds and outdoor games to keep them entertained
- a torch and warm clothes
Don’t bring
- dogs, matches or cigarettes (as no smoking or fires are permitted on the lawns)
All picnics are in aid of the Taalmuseum’s reading project for children, Let’s Read! Visitors are encouraged to bring new or used children’s books to donate.
Diarise these dates for upcoming Taalmonument full-moon picnics:
19 January 2019
22 February 2019
22 March 2019
