The Marine hotel celebrates whale season with a week of inspiring talks, high teas, and a 7-course dinner prepared by Greenhouse chef Farrel Hirsch.

Every year, between the months of June and December, the once-sleepy seaside town of Hermanus welcomes a procession of very important guests. We’re referring, of course, to the southern right whales, for whom Walker Bay is a preferred breeding ground during the winter months. Their arrival also draws a fair amount of mammals of the human variety, eager to catch a glimpse of their majestic maritime counterparts.

As such, the resort town becomes a hub of activity, especially during the annual Whale Festival, which promises to be an especially eventful occasion this year, as The Marine – an Eco-Marine partner of the Whale Festival – is hosting its very own Whale Week.

Featuring a lineup of inspiring talks and presentations, as well as various food and wine offerings (including a seven-course dinner), Whale Week at The Marine takes place from 23 September to 28 September 2019, and serves as a precursor to the Hermanus Whale Festival that kicks off on 27 September.

Whale Week highlights

Pop Up Dining Experience Marine Hotel

Situated on the famous cliff path, The Marine offers luxurious comforts and splendid views of the bay, making it the ideal base for (serious) whale watchers. Highlights of Whale Week include:

  • A presentation by Thembinkosi “Bravo” Sabazile, the town’s official whale crier, who will demonstrate the kelp horn he uses to signal a whale sighting.
  • The unveiling of the hotel’s new Whale Bell, which can be used to alert guests to whale sightings. Dudley Coetzee, the mayor of Overstrand, and Thembinkosi Sabazile will cut the ribbon to officially launch Whale Week.
  • A talk by marine biologist Dr Els Vermeulen about marine life, conservation and the Adopt a Whale programme.
  • A talk and exhibition of underwater photography by divers Keri Muller and Helen Walne.
  • A Mini High Tea, with a selection of treats and snacks, including finger sandwiches, mini strawberry lamingtons and chocolate brownies.
  • A screening of Lisa Beasley’s documentary Tidal, a story of how a bond with the ocean helped Lisa recover from a horrific accident.
  • A pop-up fine dining experience, with a seven-course tasting menu (plus wine-pairings) prepared by Greenhouse Restaurant’s head chef, Farrel Hirsch.
  • A Gintails Special in the hotel’s Sun Lounge bar, with Hendricks and Wixworth cocktails from R65 to R70 throughout the Whale Week.

The various talks, presentations and exhibitions are complimentary, but those followed by canapés and wine (courtesy of Creation Wines) cost R95. The mini high tea and pop-up dinner cost R100 and R975 respectively.

Booking is essential. Reserve your spot at the various events by contacting The Marine.
