World Arts Cinema Season 2017

World Arts Cinema Season 2017

No Man’s Land, Johan Persson

Catch brilliant performances from the world’s best stages at The Fugard Theatre.

There’s something decidedly indulgent about sitting in a movie on a beautiful summer Sunday… But when there’s a screening of one of the world’s best theatre productions, it’s hard to resist.

The popular Fugard Theatre 2017 Bioscope World Arts Cinema Season is back, bringing Capetonians some of the world’s best theatre, opera and ballet. Once again, locals can expect performances from the The Royal Opera House, The Royal Ballet and The Bolshoi Ballet, as well as Great Britain’s National Theatre. And, this year for the first time, the Fugard has added The Globe Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Saltzburg Festival to its stellar lineup.

Over the course of the next few months (until 13 August 2017), sit back and enjoy live screenings from the world’s most famous stages in full digital high-definition and surround-sound at The Fugard Theatre.

Stand-out productions include:
• Hedda Gabler from the National Theatre on 30 April
• No Man’s Land with Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart on 19 March
Amadeus with Lucian Msamati on 14 May
The Merchant of Venice with Jonathan Pryce as Shylock on 6 August

Ballet aficionados will enjoy Swan Lake with Svetlana Zakharova and the Bolshoi Ballet Corps de Ballet on 12 March. Opera lovers will be enthralled by Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with soprano Ermonela Jaho on 23 April, and Otello on 13 August, when Verdi’s famous opera is sung in Italian by world-famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

Parking is easy in the car park on the corner of Caledon and Harrington Streets.
