After much anticipation, Foxcroft restaurant and bakery has opened in the charming High Constantia Centre. The sister restaurant of the supremely chic La Colombe, Foxcroft’s reputation precedes it, but we have no doubt it’ll live up to the hype – what with Scot Kirton and Glen Foxcroft Williams at the helm.
Follow the fox
Inside, the restaurant is an inviting mix of modern design and laidback elements. We love the mid-century-modern-inspired chairs, wood panelling throughout, open pass (with an eye into the kitchen), and the fox motif evident on the signage and neatly packaged ingredients and products.
Complete with an in-house bakery, bar area and open kitchen, Foxcroft plans on serving breakfast, lunch and supper. For now though, it’s focussing its efforts on lunch and dinner, and will begin serving breakfast (on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis) in a few weeks when the dust has settled.
Two top chefs: the best of both worlds
Headed by La Colombe’s Scot Kirton (who needs no introduction, as the country’s top chef), and La Colombe’s longstanding pastry chef Glen Foxcroft Williams, Foxcroft clearly has the best of both worlds in what is surely a match made in culinary heaven. Scot is known for his rigorous attention to detail, immaculate plating and exciting dishes, while Glen – who is behind the restaurant’s name and inspiration – is a patisserie whiz (and will pass on the La Colombe mantel to star pupil, Andrea Bruce).
The sample menu alone should have you salivating in your seat (whether you choose to sit indoors or out on the partially protected verandah). For starters, we’re curious to try the champagne-poached oysters; tuna tartare and Korean fried chicken. On the mains menu, the slow-cooked lamb, with white-bean hummus, gremolata crust, black olive and fir potatoes; and the seven-day dry-aged duck breast with turnips, plum and kale sound utterly satisfying. And for dessert, cashew-and-lime rose panna cotta and kalingo chocolate with burnt marshmallow and yuzu buttermilk ice-cream, anyone?
Bookings are open, so please secure your table in advance to avoid disappointment (there’s a maximum of 10 guests per table) so you can settle down to eat in the exciting, new Foxcroft.
