Giulio’s Café for modern Italian cuisine

This bright and breezy restaurant is the most recent addition to Loop Street’s lunchtime list.

It’s with open arms that city slickers take a new café into the fold, and Giulio’s Café on Loop Street is no exception. Chef and owner Giulio Loreggian serves up light modern Italian fare, providing a much needed antidote to the humdrum of the workers’ week.

The food

Simplicity reigns supreme in this gorgeous corner café, with a variety of light meals ranging from panini to pastas. But it is the daily “mangia” (which means eat in Italian) harvest table, with its cornucopia of the freshest salads, that really gets the crowds going. The breakfast offering is no less wonderful, serving up, among others, a scrumptious shakshuka, nonna’s famous eggs and, my personal favourite, Giulio’s peri-peri chicken livers – all of this, it must be said, at an incredibly reasonable price.

Deluxe coffee flows from the groaning espresso machine from 7am until close; I highly recommend taking your afternoon mocha with one of the beckoning baked goodies on display.

The setting

Decor wise, the café is a testament to elegance and simplicity thanks to famed local design star Michael Chandler, who brings his distinctive style to every finessed nook and cranny. Modern yet distinctly Mediterranean, the white and bright interior has a contemporary feel with clean lines and big glass windows, and yet it is nuanced with quirky Roman embellishments such as the gilded golden olive wreath and ornate columns reminiscent of the Corinthian order architecture of Pompeii – a sentimental nod to Loreggian’s nonna who hails from the ancient city.

The service is relaxed, warm and inviting and, if you’re lucky, you might be greeted by the delightful Mama Loreggian herself. Like a little urban oasis, Giulio’s is an island of contemporary calm in among the corporate chaos of the CBD where one can easily whittle away the hours, latté after latté, blissfully unaware of the surrounds.
