Veganism and vegetarianism, it seems, have reached a tipping point in li’l ol’ Cape Town, with a slew of quality eateries popping up faster than you can sprout mung beans. One such restaurant is The Hungry Herbivore – a cosy space on Orphan Street, in the heart of the CBD, where health fiends gather to get their fix of delicious, hearty and reasonably priced vegan fare.
When owners Amy Scott and Brent Borman moved to Thailand in 2011 for a taste of adventure, they were unpleasantly struck by a predominance of meat dishes and fried food wherever they went. Looking for healthier and more nutritious alternatives, they started experimenting with plant-based ingredients and, before long, came up with a repertoire of delicious vegan smoothies and raw food desserts. Realising they were onto something, they returned to Cape Town in 2013 and launched The Hungry Herbivore – which soon became a popular stall at markets around the Cape. In October 2016, they decided to take their business to the next level, by opening a stand-alone restaurant in October 2016.
And, although health is at the heart of their offering, Amy and Brent wanted find a balance between health and comfort. As such, diners can expect perennial favourites, with a tasty twist, such as the burger – a lentil, sweet potato and quinoa-kimchi patty served with avo, caramelised onion and spicy mayo – a hearty feast I could eat every day of the week. The sweet potato fries are perfection.
The crunchy butternut seed-based pizza is an unusual dish, but no less yummy – a biscuit-like version of a regular wheat-based variety. A delicious aioli dressing and sundried tomato topping rounds it off beautifully. Even the mozzarella is vegan and made in-house. And if that’s not enough, opt for one of the raw desserts, which got them on the gourmet map.
