Klein Joostenberg: A Delightful Winelands Farm Hub with a Bistro, Deli and Picnics

Klein Joostenberg Family Lunches

A leafy family-friendly destination for lunches, picnics and delicious deli shopping.

A rural enclave of farm-fresh food, shaded verandahs and wide open lawns in the Stellenbosch Winelands, Klein Joostenberg has grown from working farm to a country destination with something for everyone. Kick back with friends and family over breakfasts and lazy lunches at the bistro, picnic in the shade of the trees on the lawns while the kids run free, or stop by to stock up on fresh produce, meat and deli goodies (although it’s tempting to grab coffee and cake, turning a quick one-stop shop into a lingering morning of good life vibes).

Halfway between Stellenbosch, Durbanville and Paarl (and just off the N1) Klein Joostenberg is an ideal meeting spot, a green oasis that beckons when you’re on a road trip. It’s almost impossible to drive by without popping in for something, whether it’s fresh ciabatta rolls, cheese from one of the local farms, or an impulse-buy plant or two from the three on-site nurseries.

The Joostenberg Bistro

Unfussy, French-inspired, local seasonal fare is the theme at the homely farm bistro. Chefs Garth Bedford and Akram Apollis devise simple, ingredient-led menus that change often, everything made from scratch and sourced from the surrounding farms.

Breakfasts of French toast with fynbos honey and bacon, filled omelettes, bacon and eggs (or oysters and bubbly to strike a celebratory note), segue into morning snacks, with platters of the homemade French-style charcuterie that the farm butchery is known for, or the deliciously melty croque-monsieur (a toasted cheese and ham open sandwich).

Simple bistro lunchtime favourites include herb-crusted pork loin served cold with salad and pickles, steak & chips, the Joostenberg burger, smoked trout with crème frâiche & lemon dressing, baked aubergine with chimichurri, and fruit tarts or crème caramel for dessert. On the wine list you’ll find Joostenberg organic wines (all part of the same farm family.)
Opening times Monday – Sunday, 7.30am – 5pm

Picnic on the lawns

The wide lawns beyond the bistro are the ideal setting for informal family picnics, with a jungle gym, wooden picnic tables in the shade and loads of space to play. Choose from the picnic menu at the counter in the garden. There are no set baskets, rather everyone picks their own plate. Explore the Klein Joostenberg charcuterie range with the Boland platter which includes a selection of five local cheeses too. Then there are boerie rolls, baked sourdough pizzas, chicken wings, or the kid-friendly Jungle Gym box with roast chicken, cheddar, ham, rosa tomatoes, fruit and fresh bread. Finish off with a brownie, carrot cake cupcake or peppermint crisp pudding.
Opening times Wednesday – Sunday, 9am – 5pm (every day during school holidays)

Joostenberg Deli and Butchery

Klein Joostenberg Deli

A cornucopia of food-shopping pleasure, the deli tells the story of the local farmscape. Local cheeses and dairy items, free-range eggs, seasonal fresh produce, fresh-baked breads, baked treats, home-cooked ready meals, artisanal ice creams and pantry staples are all on offer. Take two baskets, as you’ll want to stock up with meat and homemade wors from the farm butchery for summer braais. They specialise in pork products (fresh and cured) but also offer quality local beef, free-range chicken, venison and lamb.
Fresh flowers, Joostenberg Estate wines at cellar door prices, and a charming range of kitchenware and décor items make for overflowing baskets.
