If you’ve ever had the delight of staying overnight at Old Mac Daddy, chances are you’ll have eaten at its on-site restaurant! Aptly named for its pitched roof, lofty proportions and idyllic farm setting, The Barn serves wholesome country food, making it the ultimate family destination – whether you’re boarding in one of the quirky airstream trailers, or simply driving through for a relaxing Sunday meal. That’s right, you don’t need to be staying at the trailer park to come and enjoy a meal at The Barn, something many people forget (or are not aware of), when they’re seeking out fun things to do over the weekend.
Situated an hour out of Cape Town, in the heart of the picture-perfect Elgin Valley, The Barn has loads going for it. Not only does it offer delicious country fare and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and orchards, the property is also home to an amazing kids’ centre, and there are loads of fun, family-friendly outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.
The restaurant recently underwent a change in ownership – it was previously run by an independent provider, but was taken over by Old Mac Daddy’s parent company. Changes aside, diners can still expect the same wholesome meals the restaurant has always been known for, with chef Ilze Beyers and her team dishing up a varied menu of fresh, seasonal and popular favourites.
The freshly tossed salads are a highlight, as are the wood-fired pizzas, and the tasty burgers. (We ordered the free-range chicken ones, which were really good, because the beef burgers are, sadly, not free-range.). Other options include local charcuterie, cheese and breadboards, curries, pork belly and a delicious-looking mushroom risotto.
The varied kiddies’ menu has lots of choices, with healthy alternatives (such as vegetables instead of fries), to ensure that even the pickiest eaters are catered for.
When it comes to the decor, imagine a dusty, hay-covered barn, bustling with farm animals… Now imagine the exact opposite, and you’ll have The Barn – a light, airy, pitched-roof space decked out with crisp and quirky decor and light-wood furniture. Designed by award-winning, Woodstock-based furniture collective, Pedersen + Lennard, the interiors have a decidedly Scandi-SA, country-chic vibe.
Floor-to-ceiling glass panes reveal stunning agrarian views across the property and surrounding valley, with a pooldeck outside that’s tempting in summer, while the fireplace appeals during winter.
Booking is essential, as the restaurant does private functions and is often full of hotel guests. So it’s best to call or email ahead before you trek to The Barn for a fun country experience…
