With a coast jumping with seafood, great local produce and crop of stylish eateries, Cape Town is overflowing with excellent seafood restaurants. This summer, make the most of the magnificent views along the coast while savouring the best local seafood at these cafes and restaurants.

1. Miller’s Thumb

For seafood with a difference, head to one of Cape Town’s hidden gems nestled between the Waterfront and the Table Mountain cableway. The converted home is full of character with brightly painted orange and green walls inside and out. You’ll do well to order a smack-of-the-sea piece of grilled fish or try a Cajun-, Moroccan-, Malay- or Creole-flavoured dish. Either way, you’ll discover why many claim it’s one of the best seafood restaurants in Cape Town.
Opening times Tuesday – Friday, 12.30pm – 2pm
Monday – Saturday, 6.30pm – 10.30pm

Baia Seafood Restaurant Cape Town
Located at one of Cape Town’s premier shopping destinations, the V&A Waterfront, Baia serves world-class fish and seafood – from fresh oysters, lobster ceviche and linefish sashimi to oven-baked linefish, Portuguese-inspired prawns and langoustines and Norwegian salmon. The cataplana – a Portuguese-style casserole of prawns, mussels, calamari and various linefish – is divine. Make sure you book in advance to get a seat on the terrace with a magnificent oceanview.

3. Panama Jacks

What better place to indulge in some fresh seafood than a fisherman’s harbour? The charming location, overlooking the very water where most of the catch is caught, adds to its authenticity. Panama Jacks has never succumbed to the swanky Cape Town restaurant scene and has always continued to serve simply prepared seafood whose flavours speak for themselves. Go with a group and order a seafood platter (deep-fried prawns, grilled baby Mozambican lobster, kingklip, calamari strips, grilled scallops with garlic butter and mussels with cream sauce). Or be adventurous and order the wild abalone, which you get to select from a tank.

The Insiders believe NV-80 has the best prawns in Cape Town, which are served grilled with garlic, white wine, olive oil and paprika or lemon, garlic, chilli and parsley. For some lunchtime or after-work indulgence, take advantage of these awesome NV-80 specials.

5. Pigalle

Baby-calamari at Pigalle Seafood Restaurant Cape Town
If you’re looking for tasty seafood with a serving of lively entertainment (think bar mitzvah band), Pigalle is where you want to be. The grilled calamari (succulent baby tubes, grilled in lemon butter and lightly brushed with a garlic marinade) is delicious, as is the Mozambican prawn curry – or splash out and order the shellfish platter. After your meal, hit the dance floor and boogie until the wee hours. NB: No children under 14.
Opening times Monday – Saturday, 12pm – late

6. The Codfather Seafood & Sushi

The Codfather is relaxed and contemporary seaside restaurant in Camps Bay. There’s a sushi conveyor belt on the one side – who doesn’t love immediate gratification? – and tables and chairs on the other, with big display fridges of fresh fish and seafood. You’re guaranteed the freshest catch, as you get to pick your own, which is then cooked immediately, so that you can enjoy it with generous helpings of sides.

7 . Blowfish

Prawn stuffed calamari skewers at Blowfish Seafood Restaurant Cape Town
This Table View restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the ocean and Table Mountain, is a favourite for sushi, but also has good seafood. Pick you your own seafood from the popular fish counter (priced according to weight) and have it grilled to your taste. Or order off the à la carte menu – we recommend the prawn-stuffed calamari skewers, the spicy creamy Szechuan calamari and the seafood chowder. Check out the TGIM Seafood Platter Special and other promotions currently running at Blowfish.

8. Willoughby & Co

Even though it is located in the middle of a shopping mall, Willoughby & Co’s tables are still the most sought after in the city. Serving Japanese-inspired cuisine, this Waterfront restaurant has continued to grow in popularity because it continues to serve consistently excellent (and fresh) seafood and fish. While you’re there, ask George to help you select some fish or seafood from the always busy fish counter to take home with you.

9. Chapman’s Peak Hotel Restaurant

Chapman's Peak Hotel Restaurant
Famous for its succulent and delicious fried calamari drizzled with garlic and lemon butter, this iconic hotel’s restaurant is a favourite among locals and visitors. Aside from the famous calamari, there are loads of other fish and seafood dishes to choose from. It is perfect for a family day out, with both terrace seating and a cosy interior. 10. Café Orca

Café Orca Seafood Restaurant Cape Town
This beachfront eatery in Melkbosstrand, with some of the best views in the city, prides itself on serving local and sustainably procured seafood. The patio is a popular seating option among diners, but when the weather isn’t cooperating, the cosy beach-cottage interior offers comfort and intimacy. The menu is varied, with something for everyone. Some of our favourites include Orca’s local mussels topped with tomato salsa, cheddar and bacon bits; spicy shrimps (de-shelled prawns, Cajun butter and Asian noodles) and the kingklip Alaska topped with creamy garlic and smoked-salmon sauce.

DEfinitely NOT Blowfish – very disappointing meal there two weeks ago of KingKlip.
You missed The Brass Bell at Kalk Bay – Brilliant seafood and service as also The Capoe Town Fish Market V&A

We agree: the Brass Bell should definitely be on that list!

  2. Helen

Great list – but all of them are fantastically *OVERPRICED* and not aimed at locals, unless it’s for a special occasion.

  3. Hans-Erich Tietenberg

I fully agree to the rating. Miller’s Thumb for me is the unrivaled gem among the best in CPT.

  4. Mike Johnson
