With loads of benches and lawns to lounge and picnic on, the Green Point Urban Park is a wonderful alternative to the beach.

Like most big cities, Cape Town has a series of well-trodden green belts or parks, where locals head to read, chill, picnic or exercise. One of our current favourites – for its sea-facing location and amazing fitness facilities – is the multipurpose Green Point Urban Park.

The landmark includes a learning park for functions, seminars and arts training; a fitness park for cycling, outdoor training and gym; an art park for specialist events, exhibitions and craft markets; a play park; an adventure park; a heritage park and an events park for outdoor markets, concerts, competitions and events. Additional facilities include a tea garden, biodiversity nursery, a bicycle rental store and a fresh-produce market.

Camping, braais, alcohol, swimming and skateboarding are not permitted, but leashed canines are! On sweltering days, when the beach crowds and sand don’t appeal, a picnic in the park is the way to go.
