Peregrine Café reopens

Peregrine Café reopens

Fresh, wholesome, local ingredients are the drawcard at this newly rebuilt Elgin restaurant attached to the landmark farm stall.

After a devastating fire in May 2014, the Peregrine Farm Stall restaurant has reopened as the Peregrine Café! The relaunch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the well-known farm stall beside the N2 at Elgin.

The airy interior contributes to a cool, contemporary relaxed space that provides a welcome change of scene for travellers on their way to or from Cape Town. Inspired by the apple barns in the area, the restaurant is decked out with glossy screed floors, vintage Hoi P’loy lighting and Austrian spruce and glass. Outdoor seating is still available, as with the previous eatery.

The menu

With the focus on breakfast and lunch, the café has all the classic favourites. On the breakfast menu you will find healthy options such as The Pollinator – toasted Peregrine granola served with thick Greek yoghurt, local berries and Elgin honey (R35), and also hearty options such as The Tractor Mechanic – sourdough toast topped with savoury grass-fed beef mince, fried free-range egg and roasted tomato and pesto (R37, single; R68, double).

For lunch, the chicken and broccoli salad (R63) with chargrilled lemon and herb-marinated Elgin chicken breast, broccoli, marinated peppers and rocket with a wholegrain mustard vinaigrette is good, or go for the popular and hearty homemade Peregrine Pies (in chicken, springbok, pepper steak, steak and kidney, or spanakopita) served with a side of fries or salad (R35). Also on the lunch menu are burgers, boerewors rolls and quiche.

On the drinks menu, a number of refreshing options are available and include Origin Coffee-based drinks such as iced coffee and coffee milkshake, as well as locally made Everson Cider, craft beer and local wines from Iona, Paul Cluver and Oak Valley.

While visiting, take the time to check out the vintage tractor collection, the rose nursery, decor store and kiddies’ park.
