The Best Gourmet Picnics in Cape Town 2018

The Best Gourmet Picnics in Cape Town 2018 Boschendal Wine Estate

From winelands and forests to beaches and parks, there is no shortage of magnificent places to picnic in Cape Town and surrounds.

Nothing says “Summertime and the living is easy” quite like an alfresco meal. Fortunately we live in a country that’s blessed with a dreamy climate and stunning natural beauty, which means we’re never far from a beautiful place to enjoy an outdoor feast.

The thrill of unwrapping lovingly packed sandwiches and other tasty nibbles, and cracking open a cold beer, homemade lemonade or a glass of wine, while relaxing under a tree by a river is the stuff that memories are made of. A lot of companies have cottoned onto this idea by offering ready-packed picnic hampers full of delicious treats, so that all you have to do is call and reserve one, before pitching up to claim your spot. Here are some that are worth a try:

1. The Greenhouse Restaurant at Babylonstoren

Greenhouse Restaurant Babylonstoren, Picnic Spots in Cape Town
Yoco Eatery

The setting The lush garden at the heart of this illustrious wine farm is where you’ll find the elegant Greenhouse Restaurant. The farm-fresh produce is served in picnic-style wooden crates, and can be enjoyed within the restaurant itself during colder weather, or outside under the majestic oak trees.
What’s on the menu Options may vary according to availability of ingredients. They include:

  • Freshly baked scones served with cream
  • Pot pie served with crunchy salad
  • Soup (hot or cold), served with crisp melba toast
  • Farmhouse cheeses
  • Marinated Babylonstoren olives
  • Smoked chicken
  • Sandwich of the day
  • Potato wedges
  • Jar salads
  • Popsicles
  • Homemade ginger beer and craft beer
  • A selection of Babylonstoren wines

Wow factor The impressive steel-and-glass conservatory, custom-built for Babylonstoren by Serres et Ferronneries d’Antan in France. The farm-to-fork practices employed at the estate’s other fine restaurant, Babel, are in full evidence here, incorporating ingredients freshly plucked from the surrounding garden.
Opening times Monday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm
Please note The Greenhouse Restaurant does not take reservations. It’s first-come first-served (and, trust us, it can get busy). That said, groups of 13 to 25 guests may book their place two months in advance, and larger groups are encouraged to book one of the private function venues.

  3. Lynne Shepley

Interesting – but what about all the beautiful picnic spots in and around Constantia?

  4. Shahieda Manuel

Hi_ all the places looks beautiful. I am looking for a place that offers the same but it must be fully Halaal not Halaal friendly. I would like to take my hubby on a picnic experience.

    • Lisa

Kirstenbosch tearoom picnics; halaal and middle eastern delicious. Find them online.

  5. Von

Have experienced 2 picnics at rheboskloof in the last year, both times had a amazing day, food Fabulous, wine amazing, the best grape juice I have ever had, and. Lastly the setting truly wonderful and relaxing. Highly recommended !
Very welcoming to families and children, we had free pony rides , the kids loved it!
Also did a elegant picnic at Grandeprovance – very elegant, lovely wine and food! Not suitable for kids though though.

  6. Gerna Rossouw

Why didn’t Hartenberg make it onto the list?

  7. karel dampies

wow what an amazing place to relax and have fresh air and great food and tasty wine.

  8. Chris

Who likes to join me for the “Grand Provence” Picnic next month?

  9. Tracy London

Amazing list, but I’m really surprised that Buitenverwachting didn’t make it onto the list.

    • The Inside Guide

      Hi Tracy

The estate is apparently not doing picnics this season… We were also disappointed.

  10. Gail Johannessen

My hubby and I have just started exploring the Wine estates – don’t know why we were so boring all our lives!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. karel dampies

i like this relaxing places where you can stress free relax.

  12. Kathi

Please do a Joburg list like this….

  13. Angela Botha

Can we arrive with our own Banting picnic?

  14. Jo Lister

do something completely different – book a horse trail with a delectable picnic at Horse About Trails, the most beautiful setting in the mountains and as not overcrowded, usually very private

  15. Genevieve Diedericks

Are any of theses places (excl. Warwick who we visit often) pet/ dog friendly. My pom loves to picnic with us 🙂

    • The Inside Guide

      Hi there

You’ll have to contact the places directly and ask them if they allow pooches.

    • Sandy Bailey

Not a good idea to bring dogs to Buitenverwachting as the owner has Ridgebacks and although they are friendly we don’t take chances.

    • Maria Jansen

Is Warwick dog friendly ? I know Blaauklippen allow dogs on the market day
      Also Lourensford
At Blaauklippen one can sit on your own blanket under the trees – I am not sure re the food

    • Renusha

Hi. Eagles Nest in Constantia allows dogs. And is so beautiful. The food is great.

    • Lisa

Spice Route is a great place for a picnic & is pet friendly.

  16. samantha

Just love picnics thanks for the list, however …I personally feel there is a gap in the market for a beautiful venue but an A la carte style picnic. In the same way that one does not always enjoy a set menu at a restaurant … I can never seem to find a picnic menu that suits everyone. Would be great to grab a basket …choose from a selection of freshly made goodies per item and voila …a picnic you are 100% happy with. Anywhere like this exist?

  17. lerrin coetzee

Thankyou for this list I was just wondering if it’s only spier that offer gluten free options

  18. Courtney Reece

Aldine, Solms Delta is incredible and highly recommend it.

Hi I had the most amazing picnic at Morgenhof Wine Estate in Stellenbosch last weekend . With Peacocks roaming the estate and they have this new celebrity chef – It was amazing – I’m surprized its not on your list but thanks for this great article – I love picnics!

  21. The Inside Guide

That’s a difficult one to answer, Aldine… I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them. Please let us know which you decide to do – and if you (and your man) enjoyed it.

  22. Aldine

Anyone have suggestions to which one to go? They all look amazing… want to take my boyfriend.
