Pizza Warehouse in Gardens is the Dog’s Bollocks

Cape Town’s beloved burger joint has branched out into pizzas, too.

If, like us, you love a hidden gem, then you’re sure to have come across Yard – home to the legendary Dog’s Bollocks, whose burgers are among the best in town. This atmospheric garage-cum-eatery is also our go-to place for Mucky Mary’s Breakfasts and The Bitch’s Tits’ Lunches and… drum roll please… it’s now home to our favourite new pizza “parlour”.

The pizza menu has four sections, divided by base type: Classic Neapolitan (a thin base with a puffed-up outer crust that is baked for 90 seconds at 900 degrees. Yikes!); California Super Thin Crust (the name says it all); Romano Thick Crust (medium to thick dough, light and fluffy inside but crispy on the outside); and the New York (a monstrous 45cm medium-thin chewy crust), and you can also customise your own.

All doughs are made in house and fermented for the requisite 48 hours. And, as an added bonus, they all come with a tray of complimentary extra toppings! Choose from chilli oil, chilli flakes, olives, garlic, jalapeños, pepper, and extra salt to add extra flavour to an already flavourful dish.

Being partial to a good challenge – and a big fan of next-day pizza – I opted for a Brooklyn pizza (caramelised onions and BBQ chicken strips) on a New York base. Hands down: best pizza in Cape Town! The cocktails are pretty good, too, and you must try the scrummy white-chocolate chip brownies.

If you’ve not been before, we thought we’d prepare you: the waitrons are a rowdy lot: they’ll explain the menu and holler when your burger order is ready (the pizza section is slightly more mannerly) – No linen napkins and silver service here – in fact, using cutlery is almost considered an insult.

Good to know You can bring your pooch as Yard is a dog-friendly establishment.
