Fellow commiserators, Daniel Holland (of YoursTruly) and James Louw (of JL Joinery), have combined their creative flair, pulling in the operations expertise of Dino Moulopoulos to open Kloof Nek’s trendiest new watering hole-slash-restaurant. An intricately crafted French Oak and marble bar, navy leather benches and striking chandeliers create an elegant atmosphere that’s offset by off-the-cuff illustrations and a group of headless Venuses.
In the kitchen, head chef Shayne Schutte has created an eclectic winter 2017 menu that is simple, seasonal, and excellent value for money. The victuals include tidbits of lamb ribs, pork chipolata – and a chorizo, date and orange salad that is one the best dishes I’ve eaten all year. For mains we opted for the lamb shank and porchetta with a side of polenta – the perfect accompaniment to the saucy dishes. The perfume of fresh herbs are evident in both dishes, complementing the fattiness of the perfectly cooked meat. The deconstructed apple pie is sweet and tart, and the crème brûlée ticks all the right boxes. The service is on the ball and the staff are friendly, making you feel welcome from the first hello.
