Coffee and croissants on the stoep at this Drakenstein gem.
When done right, there are few things that compare to a good coffee and a freshly baked croissant. The good news is that you need not travel to Paris to get your fix: John Hamman and Marius Uys (the duo behind Slippery Spoon Kitchen) have brought a little taste of France to the sleepy town of Wellington, just 45 minutes from Cape Town.
What’s in a name?
They’ve called it FiftyFive Croissants. Why? Because only 55 classic buttery French croissants will be made each day. So, you’re guaranteed of receiving the freshest-possible, best-quality pastry, with minimal waste for the café!
Johan and Marius are also treating their fans to a weekly gourmet croissant for, you guessed it, R55. Think pressed toasted, stringy cheese with origanum, Dijon mustard and lots of black pepper; or fresh mozzarella Caprese with a good glug of olive oil; or a decadent chocolate bread-and-butter pudding croissant; or a mustard toasted-cheese croissant with roasted tomato soup. Score!
Coffee, curbside
The charming café has ample space for those wishing to linger longer. Sit on the front sun-dappled stoep and enjoy the country life, or take your pick from the cosy foyer or gorgeous attic, with its ceiling-flower arrangement by The Wild Bunch Flower Farm. If it’s an on-the-go kind of day, grab your takeaway curbside. The coffee is a real treat, too, freshly brewed by Baard & Co microbrewery.
Pantry provisions aplenty
The café’s shelves are filled with an assortment of take-home goodies: homemade sourdough loaves, braai spice, Oakland Mushroom grow kits, coffee beans, fresh eggs from Klipdrift Vrywei Eiers and other top-notch necessities.
