Winter dining with glorious views.
There’s no doubt that Hazendal has set its sights on taking the luxury-wine-estate concept into the 21st century. Visitors to the farm will be welcomed and impressed by a series of unique and enchanting experiences that combine its owners’ Eastern European heritage with the estate’s South African roots.
From the charming Babushka Deli stocked with artisanal products to the fascinating (and delicious) Traditional Tea Ceremony and the popular summertime Pivnushka beer garden, the dining experiences on offer are a series of sensory and visual delights.
Designer dining at Hazendal
Topping Hazendal’s menu of culinary pleasures is The Glasshouse, a contemporary dining space that not only embraces its lush bucolic surroundings, it ramps them up stupendously. Inspired by Victorian-era glasshouses in some of the world’s most loved botanical gardens, The Glasshouse is another nod to Hazendal’s commitment to honour the past – albeit with a thoroughly modern bent.
From now until end-August 2022, The Glasshouse opens its doors to the public for elegant weekend lunches. Executive chef Michélle Theron has compiled a concise but delectable à la carte menu of seasonal country cuisine with a fine-dining spin.
Starters include a smoked duck, shiitake and kombu broth or curried mussel and potato terrine, while mains elevate the classics with roast-chicken roulade, Karoo lamb steak or slow-roasted beef shin served with a parsnip and pear tart. Must-do desserts include a Fabergé egg-inspired chocolate-rum delight and a baked apple Sharlotka (sponge cake) with thyme ice cream. If your taste buds tend to the savoury side, the cheese fondue will be a perfect ending.
Along with the fine food, there’s a selection of wines, cocktails and other drinks to accompany your meal. Or book a pre-lunch wine-tasting to find your favourite Hazendal wine.
Whether it’s a blustery day, rainy or just chilly, a meal at The Glasshouse is like dining alfresco, but with the cosiness of being sheltered from the elements.
