Harringtons Cocktail Lounge

If JFK were to take Jackie out for pre-theatre drinks, this cool new cocktail lounge in Cape Town’s East City is where I’d imagine them going.

Ornate, plush, and beyond beautiful, this hot new after-work drinks spot – once a grungy live-music dive (The Assembly) – is the undertaking of the same team who brought us Aces ’n’ Spades, The Village Idiot, Villains Ale House, and SurfaRosa (also recently opened).

Draped velvet curtains line the interior walls and velvet-covered booths. Scattered in between the windows and throughout the venue are framed botanical sketches, old black-and-white pictures of Cape Town, and Baroque-style paintings. The drama continues above, with Victorian cornices, crystal chandeliers and eclectic lounge music, while underfoot, revived hardwood floors are adorned with Persian carpets.

The most magnificent of all the features is the striking L-shaped bar that wraps around half the venue, boasting exposed brick behind rows of spirits. The cocktails, as one would expect from a cocktail lounge, are excellent, and some of the best we’ve had in the city recently. Pair your poison with an assortment of tapas for the table to share. We recommend the meat platter (and the seafood platter with oysters if you’re feeling fancy).

Opened February 2017
Opening times Thursday & Friday, 12pm till late; Saturday, 5pm till late
