New restaurant: Kleinsky’s Deli

Jewish cuisine gets a hip, modern makeover.

New restaurant: Kleinsky’s Deli

Brothers Adam and Joel Klein’s vision – to inject an element of nowness into traditional Jewish cuisine – came to fruition when Kleinsky’s opened its doors in November. This New York-style deli on Sea Point’s Regent Road serves a selection of mouthwatering goodies, including Latke Benedict, Challah French Toast, Pastrami Knishes and, of course, Hot Beef on Rye.

The space

Echoing the Klein brothers’ contemporary approach to their roots, Kleinsky’s interiors have a pared-down industrial-chic feel. Think brass pendant light fitting, and wood-panelled bar stools at the street-facing counters to watch the passing trade. A series of artworks by Paris-born local artist Lucie de Moyencourt, deck the walls, adding softness and elegance to the space. Entitled Atlantic Seaboard, Lucie’s paintings include some of Cape Town’s most iconic spots, such as Clifton 4th’s beach, the Camps Bay strip and the Sea Point promenade – all of which are available for purchase.

A large chalkboard behind the main counter bears the beautifully inscribed menu. And, well done to the brothers for creating lots of space around the counter for those ordering takeaways – there is nothing worse than being cramped, or falling all over sit-down diners, while you’re trying to browse the menu.

The menu

Interestingly, the food is not kosher – for the brothers, it was all about re-igniting an interest in Jewish culture and cuisine, rather than the religion per se. So, you’ll find a host of traditional favourites, such as Matzo Ball Soup (made with rustic vegetables and shredded chicken), Chicken Liver, and Blintzes (pancakes with a zesty lemon and cheese filling, served with chunky apple sauce and seasonal fruit compote). Kleinsky’s menu offers choices for breakfast, lunch and light suppers, and there’s sure to be something to satisfy a host of palates.

great food, great vibe, and I believe the best coffee in Sea Point! my husband and I keep going back, it’s lovely to sit and talk loudly and not care about what others think – everyone talks loudly as is the Jewish way at the table!

I haven’t been to kleinsky as it closes to early. Every time I have gone past the doors are closed. The hours of this deli should be longer
