Bites Beach Café at De Hoop Nature Reserve

Morukuru Bites Beach Cafe Dook

A converted fisherman’s cottage with ocean views to die for.

Perched on rocks and sand dunes overlooking the breakers of the Indian Ocean coastline, the brand-new Bites Beach Café by Morukuru Family is about as away from it all as you can get. The historic Cape Dutch fisherman’s cottage, Koppie Alleen, has been sensitively restored with the addition of glass doors and a wide deck to create the ideal lunch and coffee stop for walkers and nature-loving day visitors to the reserve.

Casual lunches

Fresh fish, salads, wood-fired pizzas and simple burgers (not to mention coffee and cakes) are the mainstay of the daytime menu, when the relaxed vibe allows for barefoot beach time on the sheltered cove below. (There are beach towels, sandboards and umbrellas available to hire if you came prepared for walking rather than impromptu beach time). And in winter, the café offers a ringside seat for land-based whale-watching when the southern right whales migrate to these waters to calve between July and November.

Private dining

At night, the café transforms into a private dining room for guests of the nearby Morukuru Beach Lodge and Ocean House, serving up African-themed dishes with a twist.

Bites Beach Café adds another must-do item for visitors to De Hoop, or your next Garden Route road trip.
