Old Town Italy: A Taste of Italian Culture + Cuisine in Constantia

From melt-in-the-mouth melanzane to tantalising tiramisu and perfectly prepared pizza and pasta, Italian cuisine is so darn delicious, and hard to beat in terms of the comfort quotient.

One such place to get your fix is Old Town Italy – a trattoria-style eatery and deli at High Constantia Centre, and the latest culinary addition to the vineyard-strewn suburb.

Decorated with hanging plants, dark-wood accents and a smattering of café chairs and tables inside and on the valley-facing courtyard, Old Town Italy – as its name implies – is a celebration of traditional Italian culture, with Neapolitan songs, such as “That’s Amore”, “Mambo Italiano” and “L’Americano” providing the soundtrack for a hearty and homely experience.

Italian for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Whatever time of day you visit, you’ll find what you’re looking for: from build-your-own deli boards, homemade luganica (sausage) and poached egg on toast, and waffles for breakfast to lunches of fresh Caprese salad, truffle burrata, polpette, arancini, bruschetta and of course, pizza and pasta.

Dinner is, not surprisingly, the main event, with a smorgasbord of options from cicchetti (snacks) and antipasti to insalata, pizza and pasta and secondi, such as chicken assagi (grilled chicken breast, with roasted vegetables, sundried-tomato pesto and zucchini fritters); steak Fiorentina (T-bone, served with Tuscan-style potatoes, marinated cannellini beans, tapenade and a sage and onion sauce); and prawns Mediterranea.

Before you leave…

In addition to the restaurant, Old Town Italy has a deli section with a meat, cheese and bakery counter, each stocked with top-quality local, artisanal produce – as well as an Italian wine and grappa section.

Enquire about these festive evenings, where for just R425 per person, diners are invited to enjoy a five-course meal, paired with Idiom wines and live entertainment. Seating is at 6pm. Buon appetito!
