When you first arrive at Raw & Roxy, you wonder how any food could be prepared in such a small space. The chalkboard menu seems simple, but owner Beatrice Holst will custom-make just about anything raw and vegan you can think of – from salads and smoothies to raw lasagne, zucchini “pasta” and macarons (made from coconut, cacao butter and organic almond flakes). Beatrice, originally from Denmark, has visited 85 countries and firmly believes that South Africa is the best country she has lived in. (We second that!) Her boundless energy is a convincing testimonial for the benefits of a raw-oriented lifestyle, which she adopted as a result of her own health problems, and she is determined to offer others her version of healthy, healing raw vegan food. She seems to have a hand in everything at once, but don’t be afraid to ask her questions, as she will find time to attend to you, even if she looks extremely busy.
Causing a buzz (in more ways than one) is the coffee-substitute beverage, aptly named Rocket Fuel. It is packed with enough raw cacao and medicinal herbs to give you more than just a boost.
Raw & Roxy is great for breakfast, an in-between juice or smoothie, or lunch – and you’re guaranteed to leave feeling satisfied yet light on your feet.
