Societi Bistro: Homely Fare in a Homely Setting in the City

A buzzing bistro on Cape Town’s centrally located Orange Street.

Housed in what remains of a very old Victorian dame, the restaurant’s character is exuded by the imperfect bones of the building. All the details are reminiscent of years gone by, from the exposed brick walls, crumbling plaster, intricate cornicing and original wood floors.

The homely setting

What was once the living rooms of a family home are now divided into separate dining areas; cosy alcoves that make this restaurant the best place to be on a cold and wet winter’s evening. Did we mention there’s a fireplace, too?

On balmy summer evenings, the tree-lined, street-facing terrace is buzzing with locals until late at night.

Tables are dressed in white tablecloths – very modest – while food is served on Victorian-style plates. Most impressive is the service. You’ll be well taken care of.

The homely fare

A lot of dishes on the winter 2018 menu are named after well-known foodies: The roasted bone marrow starter is named after Jenna Bruwer, while the Karoo lamb shank is named after Tony Jackman, who, in his own words is “fall-off-the-bone delicious”.

Insider tip Parking is free across the road at the UCT campus.

Opening times Monday – Saturday, 12pm – 10pm
