Move over Hemel-en-Aarde – there’s a new foodie kid in the Overberg.

There’s something decidedly dreamy about the less crowded rolling hills and green pastures of the beautiful Stanford Valley. Fabulous food, glorious scenic landscapes and fresh country air are food for the mind, body and soul.

Foodies, take note

The newly opened Manor House Restaurant at the Stanford Valley Guest House is the perfect foodie destination – it’s on our list of the best restaurants in Hermanus! The super-stylish furniture and décor, carefully curated by co-owner Elsabe Nauta and sourced from vintage, antique and junk shops in Cape Town and Stanford, creates the perfect canvas for enjoying a lovely meal, with views over the paddocks towards the Akkedisberg Mountains.

A warm fireplace greets visitors on cold and rainy days – a perfect welcome and well worth the 30-minute drive from Hermanus. The modern country-style food is beautifully prepared and presented by consultant chef Madré Malan (formerly of Madre’s Kitchen in Stanford) and her culinary team.


Gourmet breakfast

Our party of four was fortunate to be staying overnight at the guest farm and enjoyed two of the restaurants fabulous breakfasts. A delicious red juice (beetroot, pineapple and carrot) greeted us at the breakfast table on our first morning, followed by the Full Manor House Breakfast (R85) for me: crisp bacon, cherry tomatoes, creamy mushrooms and farm-fresh scrambled eggs. The others opted for the Banter Breakfasts (R75): a heavenly combination of cream cheese on two slices of excellent seed loaf topped with slices of smoked trout, chopped walnuts, crispy fried capers, pomegranate seeds, raspberries and micro greens lightly dressed and flavoured with a delicate lemon and pomegranate dressing – simply delicious! And the fourth person at our table went for the Apple and Guava Parfait with Double Greek yoghurt (R45) topped with nutty granola for crunch – which he savoured. Particular about how our coffee is prepared, we were impressed with baristas Alex and Lawrence.

Exciting lunch and dinner options

Madre’s menu changes regularly, according to season and produce availability. We were keen to try the lunch and dinner menus but the restaurant is closed from Monday to Wednesday, so we weren’t able to. Guests can look forward to starting with dishes such as bobotie spring rolls with a sweet chilli sauce (R50) or the oven-baked baby camembert wrapped in vine leaves with olives and a warm baguette (R55). There’s a choice of six mains, including slow-roasted lamb shoulder on a barley-and-date risotto with Klein River grana (R160); pan-fried red roman with cream caper sauce and greens on a potato mash (R160); and spicy, sticky pork neck with char-grilled pear on a roasted butternut purée (R150). Four dessert items beckon, including my pick – a chocolate torte with vanilla ice cream and a berry compote (R50). With Klein River Cheese close by, it’d be sacrilege not to round of your meal with a cheese board (R50).

You’re in Wine Country

The extensive, carefully chosen wine list features many excellent wines from the surrounding areas including Springfontein, Newton Johnson, Creation, Bouchard Finlayson, Stanford Hills and the nearby Raka Winery.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Thursday to Saturday, and Sundays for breakfast and lunch. It’s also available for conferences, weddings, birthday parties and group bookings on request.
