Stellenbosch Wine Bar: The Connoisseur’s Choice

Wine-bar hopping could be considered Stellenbosch’s unofficial sport, but you might want to settle into The Stellenbosch Wine Bar and hop no further. On the corner of Church Street and Ardringa with a long pavement-side stoep (prime people-watching terroir under the oaks) the casual but cosy interior is home to an impressive family of wine brands, accompanied by a tasty little menu of hearty tapas-style dishes.

A wine family for all seasons

The Stellenbosch Collection was established by Stellenbosch wine champion Jean Engelbrecht (of Rust en Vrede renown) to embrace all his wine brands. As well as the high-end Rust en Vrede wines, you’ll find easy-drinking Guardian Peak, Cirrus (from high-altitude vineyards on the Ceres plateau), accessible but structured Afrikaans, and Donkiesbaai (elegant wines inspired by the Engelbrecht family’s holidays on the West Coast). Plus, the Stellenbosch Reserve range, a love letter to these Winelands and a true representation of its terroir (six single varietals and one blend). This means there’s something for everyone here, by the glass or bottle.

Share and pair

Rust en Vrede’s celebrated chef Fabio Daniel has devised a lively and uncomplicated Mediterranean menu of small plates for sharing and pairing with a glass of wine (ask the knowledgeable staff for pairing recommendations). Think lamb kofta with flatbread, fillet parmigiana, herb arancini, salt-and-pepper squid, hearty Italian tomato soup, and sirloin steak with a tomato salad.

Winter sees the Stellenbosch Wine Bar cosy with gas heaters inside and on the stoep, and the quieter season means it’s easier to get a table, so settle in for an extended session of wine appreciation.
