Memory-making feasts in apple country.
The Table has long been synonymous with relaxed and delicious alfresco lunches at its original home under the oak trees at De Meye. Now owners Brendan and Leigh Thorncroft are adapting the much-loved concept for a second, new restaurant at Oak Valley Estate in Elgin. Here the pool room interior (saved for rainy days) gives out onto an elegant terrace beside a turquoise swimming pool with umbrella-shaded tables beside it, and more tables are scattered beyond on the lawns under the oaks, which will make The Table regulars feel quite at home.
Family-style lunches
In iconic “The Table” style, Brendan and Leigh will be dreaming up new menus for set three-course lunches served family-style, with heaped serving bowls and platters in the centre of the table from which to help yourself. With the new venue they are excited to discover and work with local producers from the Grabouw, Elgin and Bot River regions, sourcing ingredients hyper-locally for flavour-packed dishes and menus that change each week. And naturally the food pairs with superb wines from Oak Valley (plus a few selected local vineyards).
Old favourites
Some of The Table favourites have become such classics that they will find their way onto the Oak Valley menu: old friends such as Brendan’s much-loved curry aioli, the free-range confit duck with a sweet soy glaze, or the 15-hour-braised Karoo lamb, pommes Anna, and the glorious Welsh rarebit (with beets, Dalewood Simond cheese and almond pesto) will all make regular appearances. As will the pear-and-blueberry crumble with homemade vanilla ice cream.
We can’t wait to visit The Table at this new second location for a laid-back family feast.
