Touted as “the most frequented Belgian restaurant at the Waterfront”, Den Anker could, in fact, be the most frequented restaurant at the Waterfront – which would not surprise us, given its consistently outstanding food, professional service, upscale and hospitable atmosphere, and the views… This 23-year-old stalwart is perched on the quayside, where seagulls swoop, seals bask in the sun, and passing yachts enhance the nautical feel.
On the menu, you’ll find classics such as moules marinière – the best I’ve tasted in the entire peninsula – which come with a side of moreish shoestring fries and mayo), and an exciting range of Belgian beers imported from small breweries in this Benelux country.
But, there’s more to Den Anker than mussels and beer – something we discovered when we went to check out the unbelievably priced Perfect Pair Winter Special.
The perfect pair
Den Anker’s owners know that winter is a quiet time for the Cape Town restaurant scene, so they decided to offer three of their most popular meals, paired with the perfect beer for a very appetising price tag. For just R125, you can enjoy two meals (either mussels, fish or burgers, see details below) with two beers.
- Mussels: A pot of moules marinière paired with the sweet Liefmans Fruitesse; and a pot mussels à la crème paired with the bold Maredsous Blond – R125.
- Burgers: Two tasty wagyu burgers – one with mature Gouda paired with a subtle Vedett; and the other with homemade béarnaise sauce paired with a sweet and spicy La Chouffe – R125.
- Fish: Beer-battered hake and frites paired with a subtle Vedett White; and a spicy Cape Malay fish curry paired with a crisp Liefmans Yell’oh – R125.
It is such ridiculously great value, you might just find us perched on the quayside quaffing ales and wagyu burgers every night of the week!
