Less than two hours from Cape Town lies Grootbos Private Nature Reserve – a place where endless nature and tranquil luxury converge. Set in an indigenous fynbos forest amid rolling hills of ancient milkwood trees, with views right down to Walker Bay, this slice of serenity is a haven for nature-lovers and gourmet travellers alike.
Winter is a quiet time at this exclusive eco-reserve, which is somewhat of a travesty given the stark and striking splendour of the landscape at this time of year – flaming sunsets and vibrant fields awash with new colour – as well as some of the best whale-spotting in the world. Which is why the owners decided to create a wonderful special – Secret Season at Grootbos – where visitors can experience a breathtaking stay, coupled with a handful of exciting custom-designed adventures, for a little less this winter.
So what exactly is Secret Season?
From 1 May 2019 until 15 July 2019, guests at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve can enjoy a memorable three-night stay in a private freestanding luxury suite at either Forest Lodge or Garden Lodge from R3 500 per person sharing per night.
Garden Lodge features 11 suites (either one or two bedrooms) and is open to children of all ages. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and panoramic ocean views, the lodge also has a restaurant, lounge, barista bar, boma, beauty salon, library, and a swimming pool with sea views.
Forest Lodge features 16 suites with a cosy indoor fireplace, private forest walkway, and stunning views of the fynbos, forest, and ocean. The lodge is open to children over the age of 12. There’s also a wonderful restaurant, lounge, boma, barista bar, beauty salon, library, and an infinity pool.
Both lodges are family friendly, and boast a kids’ activity room with a big screen (and popcorn machine) for movies, pool table, foosball table, library, arts and crafts, lounge, games and the sweetest child minders to look after your little ones while you enjoy a sundowner on the terrace.
In addition to five-star comfort, the special includes a full breakfast, lunch, and a five-course dinner, as well as an assortment of immersive tailor-made activities.
A smorgasbord of experiences
The adventure-packed itinerary is designed to offer travellers the very best that this enchanted otherworldly sanctuary has to offer during its quiet season. Wake up to the quiet calls of nature before embarking on a day of exploration in the stunning surrounds.
Intrepid foodies will revel in the coastline- and fynbos-foraging, and the hive-to-home honey experience, while nature enthusiasts will be in their element during the guided fynbos safari, unique riverboat cruise on the Klein River, and guided hikes through the ancient milkwood forests and fynbos trails.
If flowers are your thing, take a walk through the flowering Erica irregulars (pink blossoms endemic to the Cape Floral Kingdom and found nowhere else in the world), before enjoying a tasting of the region’s top wines with the knowledgeable in-house sommelier. And if you enjoy the splendid isolation of the vast outdoors, horse-riding into the fynbos will surely clear the cobwebs…
Grootbos is the sort of destination that keeps luring wanderlust-craving travellers back to its lair, long after their initial seduction. With nothing but the quiet calls of nature and spellbinding scenery to keep you company, this truly otherworldly location is where real-life magic happens, and is all you need to keep you warm this winter.
