This Sea Point ice-cream parlour is your childhood fantasy come true.

If you’re a fan of food trucks in Cape Town, chances are you’ve spotted the pocket-sized pink and yellow Crumbs & Cream ice-cream van. It was a regular along the Atlantic seaboard before settling outside the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront, and now we are beside ourselves with excitement that Crumbs & Cream has opened a flagship store in Sea Point.

Israeli-born sisters and co-owners Shahar and Or Peled always dreamed of a home full of ice cream and cookies, so they combined the two and conjured the delectable ice cream sandwich – a foodie trend that’s taking the Mother City by storm.

What is an ice-cream sandwich and why all the hype?

Creamy Italian gelato sandwiched between freshly baked crispy cookies, with all sorts of other yummy stuff crammed in between. Its chewy-crispy deliciousness evokes happy childhood memories of summertime.

At Crumbs & Cream, customers can choose two different-flavoured home-baked cookies, a scoop of top-quality gelato, and toppings and spreads of your choice.

Cookie options include Brownie, Candy Crush, Oreo and Red Velvet, with the addition of seasonal flavours (the Easter weekend sees a colourful cookie added to the mix).

The best-selling ice-cream flavours are Vanilla, Ferrero Rocher and Strawberry Cheesecake, but we highly recommend the Argentinian-style milk caramel spread – dulce de leche!

Other treats on offer include ice cream or sorbet cones, ice coffees, coffees and slush puppies. Banters will be happy to know that the duo are working on a LCHF cookie and sugar-free ice cream.

Insider tip Order the ice cream sandwiches to go and store them in the freezer to enjoy at your next party.
