There’s a saying that farming folk know how to party… They know how to celebrate not just the big occasions but the little pleasures of life and the passing of the seasons. They do this by gathering their loved ones and neighbours, and laying on a feast of good food and drink.

The fifth-generation Myburghs of Joostenberg offer this kind of generous hospitality for lunch every Sunday at The Kraal, a wonderfully laidback venue tucked in a corner of the old farm, beside the winery and “werf” where the family have always gathered for celebrations.

It can be booked for parties of between 30 and 60 guests, whether a birthday, intimate wedding or year-end work shindig. 

No-frills authenticity

Surrounded by old, whitewashed stone walls, The Kraal conjures a simple, almost-Mediterranean aesthetic. Guests dine alfresco at long wooden tables under umbrellas and the dappled shade of fruit and olive trees, with views of the 30-hectare farm in all directions. It’s mainly vineyards, but there are also vegetable gardens, orchards, free-range livestock, ancient oak trees and patches of rare renosterveld.

The fine-dining yet fuss-free menu is based entirely on seasonal, local, organic produce – much of it from the farm itself (which includes the odd wild-gathered herb). Bread is baked daily and other ingredients are sourced from nearby farms. For functions, chef Garth Bedford, in consultation with Susan Dehosse (née Myburgh) will put together a delicious three-course feast with canapés.

What’s a celebration without the drinks? Joostenberg’s superb range of organic wines are the perfect accompaniment to your meal – from the latest vintages to older, specially kept bottles and small-batch varietals, such as the orange-hued Kaalgat Steen. The winery also produces its own bubbly, NIU Chenin Blanc CC, with the help of Spanish cava producers. And, of course, various craft-beer options are available, too.
