Underground vibes at The Station on Bree

A Tube-themed bar opens on upper Bree Street.

Upper Bree has fully embraced its reputation as the innercity’s hip hub, with its own cocktail emporium, a dedicated gin bar (the Mother City’s first-ever), a cheese club, and a bacon bazaar. Um, what more could you ask for? An underground-themed bar, maybe?

Tube vibes

The Station on Bree takes “themed bar” to another level. Iconic sounds of the subway play over speakers in the bathrooms, which reveal exposed plumbing and copper accents. Worn-down “Mind the Gap” signage throughout gives the impression that countless soles (and souls) have scuffed against the paintwork over time. Station maps cover the ceiling, a giant platform clock presides over the bar, where a ticket window looks out onto an outdoor courtyard, boasting chalkboard table tops and a roofed train station bench. Suspended light bulbs in the main corridor change colour throughout the evening, and full-walled video timetable adds a contemporary touch. And the wait staff’s train-conductor outfits sew things up beautifully.

We loved the maze-like layout of the space – a unique characteristic of the buildings on upper Bree. Staircases take you through the different levels, each with a few cosy alcoves to hang out in. The DJ booth is like something you’d see in, well, an underground club – completely isolated on the second storey. Like the other buildings on the street, tree-sheltered sidewalk tables are going to serve as a welcome escape when things get heated on the dancefloor this summer.

Food & drink

The food menu is scheduled to launch next week (watch this space). Thankfully the cocktail menu leaves little to be desired. The owners are planning to introduce three to four per week until all 11 have been tried, tested (and approved) by the public. They’re aptly named according to lines of the underground, and I can attest to the first four’s first-class standard.

If cocktails aren’t your thing, make the dedicated cold-brew bar your first stop.
