The Yard: A Concept Space in The Silo District

A mere 150 steps from Zeitz MOCAA, this sexy bar-bistro-boutique is perfect for a morning, afternoon or evening date…

Everything in The Yard is artfully curated – and there’s a lot to savour in this contemporary new concept space where bistro meets boutique meets bar: single-origin Rosetta coffees, poison-apple cocktails, Italian charcuterie, local preserves, African wax-print washbags, even a bespoke forestware range by Anthony Shapiro.

A mere 150 footsteps from Zeitz MOCAA in the Waterfront’s Silo District, it’s a sexy spot for a morning, afternoon or evening date… and one of those places that would be fun in a party or comfortable solo. (All the better to ponder on the works of Siopis, Sibande and Kentridge across the way.)

Urban Glamporium

This eclectic collection of offerings under one roof is the lovechild of a collaboration between retail visionary Abigail Bisogno and renowned restaurateur GP Singh. Food is Euro-Asian with Indian twists on all the menus – including breakfast.

We visit for lunch and have the choice of chalkboard specials or a simple buffet that changes daily. It is surprisingly good value at R75 for three salads (as much as you can pile on your plate, and we really pile on the truffle oil-infused mushrooms with rocket), or R120 if you add the hot dishes. A glass of the notable Fairview Rose Quartz rosé is the perfect accompaniment.

Tapas are available from 4pm, and the à la carte dinner menu tempts with flavours from north, south, east and west. With so many ways to experience this urban glamporium, we resolve to revisit at a different time of day – not least to experience the intriguing sounding espresso and elderflower tonic, served on the rocks.

Jazzy Sunday Brunches

Every Sunday, The Yard serves a delectable brunch menu to the strains of live jazz. Brunch starts at 10am, but arrive early and enjoy a cup of hot-brewed coffee, or a freshly squeezed juice, while deciding on your meal. Popular choices include the fruit platter, bircher muesli and Eggs Benedict, or you could try something interesting, such as masala dosa (traditional Indian vegan and gluten-free rice-flour pancake) or poori bhaji (a spiced potato dish).

If sweet treats are your thing, go for the berry and liquorice waffle, or the luxurious grilled peach cheesecake. And, take your time, the band kicks off at 12pm and plays until 3pm.

Anyone for tea?

The cosy booths and dark interiors may seem better suited to a spicy curry than high tea, but somehow the chefs have managed to combine the best of both worlds – Indian flavour with the ceremony of British high tea. Giant pots of tea (we chose Oolong, but apparently Kashmiri kahwa is the favourite) start off a flavour journey that travels from sweet to savoury and back again.

The tiered cake stand comes laden with Gulab Jamun (sweetmeat) cheesecake, chocolate layer cake, green-tea sponge with coconut mousse, chocolate samosas and an amazing spiced carrot cake. Savouries included a delicious chicken kathi wrap, falafel pita pockets and a vegetarian Mumbai sandwich. The dishes are delicate and lovingly prepared, introduced by the pastry chef at the table so you know exactly what you’re about to eat.

Insider tip: The high tea is freshly prepared and takes about 20 minutes from ordering to arrival, so don’t try to rush the experience. High tea is available from Tuesday to Saturday.
