De Warenmarkt: An Artisanal Market in the Heart of Stellenbosch

De Warenmarkt: An Artisanal Market in the Heart of Stellenbosch

This characterful market De Warenmarkt is home to an oyster bar, wine-tasting lounge, and a canteen-style street-food restaurant.

Once upon a time, the Cape was a vital trading post – a place where ships docked to replenish their supplies before sailing on to the exotic Spice Islands in the East. It was – and still is – a place where different worlds meet.

De Warenmarkt is one such gathering place. Here, patrons can browse, sample and purchase a diverse selection of high-quality speciality meats, baked goods, craft beer, coffee, fresh flowers and more, while revelling in the atmosphere of the vibrant canteen-style communal dining hall.

Heritage on the House

De Warenmarkt Stellenbosch

The combination of quality produce and rich cultural heritage is what sets De Warenmarkt apart, as evidenced by the setting: an 18th-century historical building in the heart of Stellenbosch. It’s easy to picture sailors fresh off the VOC ships gathering here to stock up on supplies for the long voyage ahead.

The World is your Oyster

Warenmarkt

In addition to the artisanal food market, De Warenmarkt is home to an Oyster Bar (a collaboration with Simonsig Wine Estate), where you can enjoy the freshest Saldanha Bay oysters with a glass of bubbly.

There’s also a wine lounge, called Simon (as in Simon van der Stel), where you can sample some of the region’s finest vintages, accompanied by an array of tapas specially designed for pairing. Its fireplace is particularly cosy in winter…

The De Warenmarkt Deli stocks a selection of olives, jams, cheeses and meats, as well as salads and sandwiches to go. There’s plenty of seating space, so you can enjoy your meal in the midst of the market’s festive atmosphere, or take it home if you’d prefer.
