Steam Train Challenge: Take A Steam Train From Cape Town to Ceres
Race you to the rails...
By Matthew Flax • 08 October 2018
If, like Superman, you’re faster than a locomotive, you may have what it takes to participate in the annual Steam Train Challenge: a classic contest of man versus machine where cyclists and runners race a steam train from Wellington to Ceres.
But if you’re a normal person like the rest of us, you may prefer to watch the race from the comfort of Ceres Rail’s spacious lounge cars onboard Dominique, the majestic mechanical beast against whom these brave contestants will be testing their mettle.
Race or ride?
This year’s race takes place on 20 October 2018. But, why not make a weekend of it? And spend the weekend exploring this fertile valley from the comfort of a train compartment. Dominique departs from the Royal Cape Yacht Club at 3pm on 19 October 2018, and heads to the race’s starting point in Wellington, where guests can spend the afternoon exploring the charming old winelands town and its beautiful Cape Dutch architecture.
The following morning, 20 October 2018, the train leaves Wellington Station (the start of the race) at 8am and arrives in Ceres at 1pm. Along the route, there’ll be viewing points and refreshment stations, before the train hurtles into the finish line – Ceres Golf and Eco Estate. Here, live entertainment, food and drink stalls, and fun activities for the kids await.
On 21 October 2018 at 10am, the train heads back to Cape Town (with another stop in Wellington along the way).
The three-day excursion grants you the opportunity to experience some of the charming guest farms, country houses and B&Bs in Wellington and Ceres have to offer (we recommend The Riverstone House).
Train yourself
The Steam Train Challenge was the brainchild of Pieter van Wyk, a Wellington native, mountain-biking enthusiast and ex-route designer for the Cape Epic. Inspired by memories of the Great Train Race (an epic event in which relay teams raced the Apple Express steam train from Port Elizabeth to Loerie), he founded this annual race, set amid the serene scenery of the Wellington and Ceres region.
Important note This is not a Cape Town to Ceres return trip; the three routes (Cape Town to Wellington, Wellington to Ceres and Ceres to Cape Town) have to be booked separately.

The Inside Guide •
Hi Gill. This particular steam train ride is only running on 19 October, for the Steam Train Challenge. However, the steam train to the Elgin Railway Market runs regularly, usually every two weeks. You can find out more about that here: https://insideguide.co.za/cape-town/things-to-do/steam-train-elgin/
