Who knew healthy could be so irresistible?

Wholefood with a whole lotta love is what’s on the menu at Wildsprout – a buzzy little gem of an eatery at the top end of Loop Street that serves fabulous fresh fare from 7am to 5pm, and also stocks a small range of heavenly healthy foodstuffs.

Co-founders Candice Coles and Bryan Walter share a passion for conscious eating, and take enormous care in both the sourcing of organic ingredients and the preparation of tasty dishes that leave you energised and nourished rather than needing a nap after lunch.

The crowd is a happy mix of urban hipsters and young medics in scrubs (either that or the cast of Grey’s Anatomy just walked in for Superberry Smoothies and Smashed Avo on rye).

Most of the produce used in the kitchen, as well as the free-range eggs and poultry, comes from a family farm in Wellington. (Nice to know: Wildsprout’s juice pulp is recycled to fuel the farm’s veggie garden.) No stone – or grain – is left unturned in the quest to boost flavours and optimise the nutritional value of every dish: nuts, grains and legumes are soaked and sprouted before being used, all cooking and baking is done on site, and recipes are free from gluten, dairy and refined sugar.

The all-day menu is playful and interesting, and at 12 noon the Harvest Table is set out: a deliciously wholesome buffet that changes daily. We take our pick from four salads (three of which are vegan) and two yummy protein dishes.  The kale, broccoli and coconut salad, with an almond-milk-and-cumin dressing is a favourite, and we love the chicken-with-figs. The vegan veggie burgers are excellent too, and I’m delighted to find some to take home in the deli fridge. Who knew healthy could be so irresistible?
