Holden Manz Country House: An Art-Lover’s Oasis in Franschhoek
Designer bolthole.
By Nikki Benatar • 08 October 2018
Situated on a small wine estate at the top of the Franschhoek Valley, this is not your average French-inspired Franschhoek hotel… Au contraire… The European owners (German-born Migo Manz and British native Gerard Holden) have elegantly combined contemporary African art, South African warmth and hospitality, and European design aesthetics to create a unique and tranquil Cape Dutch-style guesthouse.

And, in addition to the luxe lodgings, the estate is also home to a state-of-the-art winery, tasting room and restaurant, outdoor swimming pool and serene spa and yoga studio.
The pitch-perfect interiors – dressed in an impressive collection of contemporary African art, and a combination of modern furniture and antique finds – reflect the owners’ passions; it’s hardly a surprise to find out that they own an eponymous art gallery on Franschhoek’s main road where you can purchase striking local art.

The rooms
There are five beautifully appointed guest rooms that boast magical views of the mountains and vineyards outside. Though the house accommodates a maximum of 10 people, you might never encounter another guest during your stay, as there are sumptuous sofas tucked away in various nooks and crannies, where curling up with a book from the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf is obligatory.
