The Plettenberg Hotel: World-Class Luxury by the Sea

The lodgings

Sophisticated, beach-inspired decor echoes the location, and no matter which room option you choose, you’re guaranteed a wonderful stay. With all the five-star hotel amenities you’d expect – minibar, flatscreen TV, tea/coffee station, air-conditioning, luxury bath amenities and fluffy robes, 24-hour room service – plus extra touches such as a bottle of wine on arrival, this is a luxury stay you can relax right into.

As a pet-friendly establishment, your dogs are pampered too, with a welcome treat, water bowl and pet dining menu. Your furry companion can join you in the bar and on the terrace, and there are dog-friendly beaches for walkies.

Dining at The Plettenberg

Amelia’s restaurant is elegantly decked out in harmonious hues, reflecting the blues, yellows, ochres and turquoise of the seascape it overlooks, and extends out onto the terrace for easy-breezy outdoor dining on summer days and nights.

The menu is a fresh take on the signature dishes regulars know and love, reflecting the coastal setting. Think steamed mussels, crispy tempura prawns, Thai seafood green curry, seafood pot pie, and grilled “Catch of the Bay” with pea risotto. There’s also the legendary Plettenberg soufflé with juniper-infused cheese, the classic Plettenburger with triple-cooked chips, as well as pasta, Karoo lamb, steak and pork belly. There’s an excellent wine list, and a vegan menu too.

A separate pool and terrace menu caters for light meals, when all you feel like is a poké bowl or toasted sandwich. The Sandbar continues the light and breezy beach theme in its decor; this is the spot to sip on the award-winning local bubbly and South African wines, or expertly mixed cocktails. A tempting Afternoon Tea by the Sea is served daily, on the terrace at Amelia’s or in the Summer Lounge – all with glorious ocean views.

The Fresh Wellness Spa offers relaxing and rejuvenating treatments and packages, including for couples, men and teens, using natural and indigenous plant- and marine-infused products and massage oils. There’s also a steam room, sauna and fitness studio/gym.

The hotel has a whale bell for guests to ring when they spot marine life in the bay. In addition to southern right and humpback whales (seasonal), there are year-round sightings of Bryde’s whales, bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, plus common dolphins (seasonal).

If you can bear to leave the gorgeous hotel grounds, a 10-minute stroll takes you to the town centre, where an array of wonderful shops, laid-back restaurants and nightspots await.
