A converted Boat House becomes a cosy coastal escape in Yzerfontein.
Weskus is die Beskus, so the saying goes. And if you’re fortunate enough to have spent time in one of the small towns along this windswept coast, you’ll understand its appeal.
One such spot is Yzerfontein, a once-tiny fishing village with a cluster of weatherbeaten holiday homes and a reliable surf break. Over the years, Yzers (as it’s affectionately known) has grown in size, while still retaining its dorp-like charm. And its sunsets are the kind that creep into your soul.
Design rules
On a stretch of road, just a few moments from the ocean is a brand-new holiday home kitted out with everything you need for a comfortable coastal escape.
Completed in July 2021, this Scandi-esque beach babe – once a somewhat ramshackle boathouse – might be compact, but what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in design might.
Designed by local architect Lawden Holmes (FWJK) and friend Rhett Williams-Jones, the insides are clad in suitably stylish blonde wood, and filled with carefully chosen local pieces, gleaming SMEG appliances and beautiful terrazzo floors. Together, these details are a distinct showcase of sharp style and modern comfort – there’s even a toasty fireplace for post-beach afternoons under a blanket with a book.

While you’re there
Yzerfontein is a charming village whose down-to-earth vibe is beguiling – just don’t drop in on one of the locals’ waves. There are a number of quaint eateries but nothing beats sundowner fish and chips on the rocks! And don’t forget to enquire about Blue and Sanchéz, the resident Jeep and Vespa, available for rent to get around Yzers at your leisure.
