Botany House: A Lush Sanctuary in the Heart of the Mother City

En route to Table Mountain on Kloof Nek Road, take a detour and discover a hidden corner of the city that feels like paradise. A lush garden – complete with a palm tree or two – surrounds a magical old house that’s been given a fabulous makeover.

The owners were drawn to the property’s calming, restorative feeling – and this is what led the considered transformation and design. The result is a true sanctuary of slow living, an immersive boutique stay that also places guests in an enviable location, in the centre of the urban buzz and close to all the main attractions.

Throughout the house, the architecture is shaped by natural wood, tactile finishes and gentle soft curves – resulting in spaces that are serene and comforting. There are just five suites – each a self-contained cocoon, where gauzy curtains catch the breeze and filter the light.

Layered luxury

For the interiors, the marble was chosen first – and everything flowed from there, from the tiling to the textiles. Each suite has its own colour palette and personality, furnished with Midcentury Modern pieces, local designer items (think Houtland, Deft Studios and Bofred), ceramics and enviable artworks.

There are two Garden Suites and two Pool Suites opening directly into the oasis; plus the Grand Botany Suite upstairs – the biggest space, with a lounge, kitchenette and extensive balcony. It sports distinctive round windows and skylights with views of the mountain, and two works by artist Jessica Bosworth Smith that bring a playfulness and freshness to the space.

There are plenty more creative touches to make you pause – unusual flower arrangements everywhere, in distinctive vases, like still life artworks; a silver Gaudi-esque spiral staircase in the inner courtyard; a striking “ode to mushrooms” porcelain installation by Juliet Eidelman. Other artworks include Jana Wasserman’s soulful “Jaipur” collection and Yarden Yedid Levi’s abstract canvases that transform blank walls into moments of contemplation.

Subtropical vibes

The focal point of the garden is a sparkling heated pool, reminiscent of a natural mountain pool, surrounded by greenery and a variety of loungers, easy chairs, tables and verandah decks. This is the location for enjoying alfresco gourmet breakfasts. There are also quiet nooks for reading or daydreaming. This is relaxation at its most luxe and stylish.

Every effort was taken to preserve the foliage of the property – the glasshouse was built around a magnificent old tree; the pool decking was installed around existing plants; and shaded timber pathways lead to various parts of the garden. A stream running through the property was incorporated into the overall design.

A restorative, retreat-like experience awaits, from the welcoming cinnamon tea you’re handed on arrival to various wellness treatments and yoga sessions. Seasonal retreats are hosted four times a year. Looking to celebrate your birthday here? Should you wish to explore the outside world, Botany House is just a short walk away from buzzing Kloof Street. The hiking trails of Signal Hill, Lion’s Head and Table Mountain are close by, as are the Atlantic Seaboard beaches.
