De Wildeveldt: A Soul-Restoring West Coast Wilderness Escape
Barefoot luxury, big skies and unspoilt nature.
By Inside Guide • 16 July 2026
Perched on a renosterveld-clad hillside, looking out at wide skies, bird-rich wetlands and the long sweep of the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon, are two luxury villas that immerse you in the ethereal light and wild landscapes of the West Coast. The 2000-hectare De Wildeveldt private nature reserve near Yzerfontein is only an hour from central Cape Town (perfect for a spontaneous sojourn), yet feels like a total escape: a sanctuary of stillness where you spend days exploring trails, discovering a wealth of spring flowers and bird life, dipping into your private swimming pool and, after a dramatic sunset, sinking into still nights of star-gazing from the roof-top sky deck, or from the luxurious embrace of the wood-fired hot tub.

Nature at your door

The family-owned De Wildeveldt reserve is a long-term conservation project, restoring fallow farmland to indigenous renosterveld and sandveld (not just carpets of spring daisies, but a rich tapestry of bulbs, bushes, restios and grasses) and encouraging the return of wildlife. Wild hares, steenbok and springbok are frequent visitors spotted in early mornings; on the network of trails you might see the tracks of nocturnal caracal and African wildcat; and even rare Cape leopards are known to traverse the area between the Swartland mountains and the coast. Black harriers, secretary birds, herons and raptors are just a few of the bird sightings, and the gentle hoot of barn owls and Cape eagle owls is a nightly refrain.
The Veldt Haus Collection

Built with barefoot luxury in mind, De Wildeveldt’s Veldt Haus Collection comprises two one-bedroom villas, each a beautifully designed retreat where you relax deeply into the calm of the wide-open landscape. Contemporary South African art on the walls of the open-plan lounge and kitchen contrasts with natural textures, considered design, high-end linens and thoughtful furnishings. Fireside rituals light up chilly evenings, both in the cosy lounge and out on the expansive deck where a firepit is the place to sit contemplatively enjoying dramatic sunsets until dusk falls. And there’s an outdoor shower as well as the spacious ensuite bathroom with a blissful bathtub, hot tub and private swimming pool, punctuating summer days with several sensory ways to cool off.

Taking it easy
Well-equipped for self-catering, you can also book private chefs and in-room massage treatments for extra spoils. Or order one of the bountiful breakfast baskets, a hamper of local artisan products, or a grocery delivery to stock your fridge before arrival.
