PATH Karoo: A Magical Modernist Villa in Prince Albert

On the quiet edge of town, Prince Albert Tall House – or PATH – cuts a dashing figure. A double-volume, ultra-modern monolithic space with a loft, it’s a distinctive accommodation choice, its ochre walls echoing the palette of the Karoo landscape while framing it with its design details: floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors, arches and nooks all perfectly, intentionally placed.

This Karoo town is known for its historic architecture and laid-back country lifestyle, while also embracing its new-found reputation for contemporary food culture. It leans into its serene, big-sky location, where alfresco meals stretch from brunch to sundowners on the stoep, and every starlit supper is a standout.

Opposites attract

This split-level, self-catering villa for two manages to feel both minimalist and grand. Warm lime plaster encapsulates the structure and pays homage to the beautiful colours of the Karoo, while the architecture and furnishings elevate it into something more sophisticated, cocooned by towering ochre walls that change subtly throughout the day as light and shadows play.

Upstairs is an open-plan loft bedroom, with an enormous bed and a bathtub (and shower) positioned for panoramic views. After dark, the lights of town twinkle in the distance under a sky that twinkles too, while dawn brings a gentle pastel glow over the Swartberg mountains.

Laid-back luxury

The spacious, single-roomed living area downstairs has those views, too, and all you need for staying in: a cosy fireplace, dining table, and a top-quality kitchen equipped with everything from a gas stove to an espresso machine and Nutribullet blender.

But it’s the patio that possibly steals the show, where a cool blue pool and oversized, cushioned loungers await for lazy days and siestas. There’s also a built-in braai area, an outdoor shower and a firepit, for when you simply want to enjoy the night skies.
