An immersive bush experience in the heart of the Klein Karoo.
Just over a three-hour drive from Cape Town along the scenic Route 62 lies Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – a 58 000-hectare sanctuary of untouched landscape that’s home to the Big Five.
Tucked beneath the majestic Warmwaterberg Mountains in the heart of the Little Karoo, the malaria-free wildlife reserve is the Western Cape’s answer to an exclusive wilderness experience.
In addition to three lodges, the reserve hosts a series of Explorer Camp weekends during summer (October until April), where you can experience the great outdoors in the comfort of a luxury tent.
Ideal for nature lovers seeking a true camping experience (minus the slog), Explorer Camp is entirely off the grid, and features three double tents with comfortable beds draped in mosquito nets, an eco shower and toilet facilities. It hosts a maximum of six people (16 years and older), and is available on an exclusive-use basis only.
All meals, house drinks and snacks are included, with a real highlight being starlit dinners – traditional South African dishes cooked over a campfire and enjoyed in the open-air lounge and dining area.
A walk to remember
Your stay includes two guided walking safaris, where you’ll get up close and personal with the striking Klein Karoo landscape. Hosted by a qualified, armed guide, you’re guaranteed a safe, fun and informative experience, learning about the unique and abundant birdlife, wildlife, vegetation, natural history and culture, for which the area is well-known.
Although the distances covered each day may vary, a trail can last for up to four hours. A game-viewing vehicle is also available at each camp, ready to drive you to another area of the reserve should you wish to explore a different section.
Once back from your walk, you’ll have time to relax and freshen up before enjoying a leisurely dinner under the stars. And then it’s time to hit the sack, exhausted from a day well spent in the African bush.
