A Magical Stay in a Tulbagh Manor

Tulbagh Historical Home

Where past and present collide in breathtaking style.

The historical centre of Tulbagh, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa, is essentially a national monument – with most of its beautiful old buildings impressively and lovingly rebuilt after the 1969 earthquake. A stroll down Church Street transports you back in time, surrounded by historical beauties – some of which offer the delightful prospect of staying overnight, such as the self-catering villa at No. 43.

Tulbagh Historical Home Exterior

With its architecture attributed to architect Louis Michel Thibault, who also designed Groot Constantia among other landmarks, this 1814 house has an interesting history – it’s been a home, a school and a restaurant over the decades, and has now been transformed into a luxurious self-catering gem by a Swedish-American couple with a global background in design and hospitality.

Showstopping style

Tulbagh Historical Home Dining Room

Behind its classic Cape Dutch facade – whitewashed, thatched and gabled – lies an interior that is quietly dramatic. The sense of space is wonderful, the ceilings lofty (sporting Burmese teak rafters and sparkling crystal chandeliers); the detailing is beautiful and the colour palette bold. Furnished with a mix of antiques, midcentury modern and contemporary pieces (including massive clay pots from Belgian Atelier Vierkant), it’s a beautifully evocative restoration.

The house has three bedrooms, one of them a separate “cottage” off the kitchen with its own lounge and patio (and a sleeper couch for children). It’s fitted with all the modern comforts yet feels timeless.

The art of leisure

Tulbagh Historical Home Pool

It’s the garden that might steal your heart, though… an enchanting place of ponds, fountains, pathways, lawns and impeccably trimmed hedges. The wisteria-shaded dining area under the cries out for enjoying wine with platters of local produce; the boma firepit is a wonderful spot for braaiing and stargazing; and there’s a big pool (heated on request).
