Yellowwood Cottage: A Blissful Off-Grid Sanctuary in Churchhaven

It’s hard to find a more dreamy setting than Churchhaven, the off-grid scattering of fisherman’s cottages on the shores of Langebaan Lagoon. The secluded setting within the West Coast National Park makes Yellowwood Cottage the ideal slow-living hideaway among coastal fynbos, salty breezes and unspoilt nature and, once the gates close, only the lucky handful of residents of the tucked-away hamlet are left to enjoy peaceful sunset strolls and moonlight swims in calm lagoon waters.

Nature’s magic

The charming beach villa is beautifully situated among the fynbos just a minute’s stroll down to the shore, its simple lines of camphor beams and screed floors framing a haven of unfussy comforts, from linen-covered sofas to original artworks and wood-burning stoves. Three double bedrooms (with ensuite bathrooms) look out over glorious lagoon views, and there’s also a kids’ bedroom with a bunk bed for family stays.

Time slows down here with nature setting the rhythm of your days. You might see flamingos in the shallow waters, revel in carpets of colourful flowers in spring, follow tortoise trails through the fynbos and spend days between leisurely dips, birdwatching and sand-between-the-toes wanders. Or simply curl up with books and board games by the fire, or out on the verandah, where the views are likely to distract you from the page.

Off-grid living

The simple charm of off-grid life isn’t without its comforts. The cottage is fully powered by solar for lighting and hot water, with a gas-operated hob and oven in the fully equipped kitchen. But you’re just as likely to gather in the outdoor dining area, rustle up simple, fire-kissed feasts on the built-in braai, and swap scrolling for unhurried conversations and genuine connected together-time.

Good to know There is a SANParks conservation fee, charged per day and paid on your entrance into the national park (for longer stays it makes sense to get a Wild Card). There are set gate times and no entry or exit to the park is allowed outside these hours.
