Oceans provide the best mother nature has to offer with ingredients and flavours sought-after by chefs, home cooks and food lovers. Inspiration is drawn from our local waters in this not-to-be-missed foodie adventure. Sustainability is the name of the game, with an educational outing showing you how to treat the marine ecosystem with respect and forage in a sustainable way – focusing on the prolific edible seaweeds and invasive mussel species. So, if you’re keen to try your hand at it, read on.
Summer seaside foraging

Wild-food expert Roushanna Gray hosts coastal foraging courses aimed at discovering, learning and sustainably harvesting the wonderful ingredients that our southern oceans have to offer.

Your day starts on Scarborough Beach, where you will explore the magical world of rock pools, hunting for edible seaweeds and mussels and collecting the best gems. Then it’s back to the Veld and Sea HQ for snacks and refreshments, entertaining food demos (pay careful attention as you will be helping to prepare lunch) and a celebratory three-course meal paired with wines and sodas.

You will also go home with some of your foraged bounties, with recipes for preparing and preserving them at home. Included is a set of notes about species identification, moon phases, tidal charts, a recommended booklist and Spotify playlist. With this package, you’ll look like a natural the next time round.

If this sounds like the type of foodie adventure you’d love to experience, enter our competition below and stand a chance to win.

We need to establish a good relationship with nature where we see ourselves as connected. Never more urgent than in these times.
