Bistro Sixteen82: Dinner with Rebecca Davis at Steenberg Farm

Women’s month at Steenberg is all about celebrating trailblazing women like its pioneering founder, the redoubtable Catharina Ras, who settled on the Constantia Valley farm back in 1682 to become the first female landowner in the Cape. As such, the keynote speaker at this year’s Speaker Series dinner event is Daily Maverick journalist Rebecca Davis, while yet another inspiring woman, executive chef Kerry Kilpin, creates a superb menu of mouth-watering shared plates and refined mains for this memorable occasion.

Resilience and insights

In an evening that is all about paying tribute to the strength, perseverance and versatility of the modern woman, Rebecca Davis shares her sharp, funny and warmly observant reflections on a career spent reporting the news, and the altogether more demanding assignment of navigating adulthood, parenthood and the strange indignities of approaching middle age. An affectionate tribute to the women keeping everything going – or, at the very least, creating that impression.

A menu of feisty flavours

There’s nothing like a superb succession of flavours to keep the conversation flowing and spark the imagination. After a glass of bubbly on arrival, the feast starts off with three starters to share: a pickled fish taco; baked brie with star anise-poached quince, almond mousse and thyme honey; and beef pot stickers with red cabbage and mangetout salsa, sesame, ginger vinaigrette and aioli.

For mains choose between roasted pork belly with parsnip and spinach risotto, mushroom chutney and prune jus; or a vegetarian roast parsnip and spinach risotto with pumpkin seed and chilli crunch.

And luckily for dessert, no choices are necessary, you get to share them all. Dip into a dark chocolate marquise, a baked cheesecake, chocolate truffles and yoghurt panna cotta.
