Drumstruck: A Group-Drumming Experience in the Constantia Valley

It’s travelled the world, graced international stages and been a Broadway hit. Now Drumstruck has returned to African soil for summer at a Cape Town wine estate on the slopes above Hout Bay and Constantia. And here it offers a true celebration of local culture, combining music, storytelling, food and wine in a unique and unforgettable experience for all ages.

A feast for the soul

It all kicks off with a tasting of the Silvermist organic wines (or an iced-tea tasting for children or non-drinkers) with owner-winemaker Gregory Brink Louw or sommelier Gift Munemo, while you soak up the views over the Peninsula. The setting is stunning, with sprawling lawns and farm animals to amuse the kids.

The show follows: a colourful and heartwarming journey through the musical heritage of southern Africa. It’s an interactive drumming extravaganza where each audience member gets their own djembe drum and plays and sings along with the pros. Somehow everyone ends up drumming in harmony, creating a sense of joy, energy and deep connection to South Africa.

Afterwards, a generous braai (lunch or sunset dinner) serves up classic, delicious, good old South African hospitality: from flame-grilled lamb chops, chicken and boerewors to pap and chakalaka, garlic bread and salads, plus dessert. Vegetarian and halaal options are available.

One of a kind

Drumstruck was conceived as a way to honour and preserve traditional music, stemming from deep research and in collaboration with experts. The show’s cast includes some of the most accomplished percussionists, singers and dancers, as well as an award-winning marimba band providing live music during and after the meal.

The theatre is a “living museum”, too, showcasing the largest private collection of traditional southern African instruments – many of which are played during the show: kudu horns, Pedi and Venda pipes, mbiras, the Uhadi bow, foot shakers and more. It also explores a variety of tribal rhythms, San Bushman trance harmonies and traditional wedding songs.

It’s entertainment pure and simple, laced with ancient stories, powerful rhythms and extraordinary performances. Like Dolly Parton, a fan of the show, you’ll be “dumbstruck by Drumstruck”.
